Research

In this assignment I am going to experiment with adding and using text in my images to demostrate my opinions on the photographs I have produced.
I have decided to focus my images on landscapes and parts of landscapes. I will display the images in a book format, with the images and words telling a story through out.
Therefore I began my research by looking at photographers who incorporated text in their images to display their thoughts and opinions.

Barbara Kruger
When I first began research into text in an image, the artist that came up was Barbara Kruger.
Although her work is appropriated (using someone elses image and editing and adding her own text and calling it her image) I was only looking at how she placed her text over an image.
I feel her work is almost like headlines of a newspaper, bold and eye catching. The contrast between black and white, to the red and white text really reitterates the idea that she is really trying to tell us her opinions. Almost forcing us to read her text. I dont feel that this would look in keeping with my landscape images, however I will use this idea to experiment with, see typography and text page.

Jenny Holzer
The next artist I came across was Jenny Holzer, although she projected her text onto landscapes, then they were photographed. Although I dont have the facility to project my text onto a landscape, I can however use photoshop to try and resemble this type of adding text.

John Kippin
The last photographer I researched was John Kippin, as I studied him in my first year of my course.
He specialises in adding text to a landscape image. The way he places his text I think joins the image together, almost like the text was meant to be part of that landscape.
